Shawn Barber, Ana Bagayan, and Catalina Estrada will show in Part 2 of La Luz de Jesus 25, a retrospective celebrating the gallery’s 25th anniversary. La Luz de Jesus is a highly influential Los Angeles gallery specializing in lowbrow, post-pop, and pop surrealism art.

Shawn Barber and Ana Bagayan will appear this Thursday (August 11) at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles for a special book signing event called SKETCH THEATER Volume 1. They will join notable La Luz alumni such as Ron English, Gris Grimly, Brandi Milne, Chet Zar, Greg “Craoloa” Simkins, Michael Hussar, Luke Chueh, Steven Daily, Tara McPherson, Nate Frizzell, Travis Louie, and Jon Schnepp. This event will celebrate the intersection of commercial illustration and gallery exhibition.

Shawn Barber has a solo show, Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots, at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco, CA. The show features the latest work in the Tattooed Portrait series, which he started back in 2005 as a way of documenting the men and women that define contemporary American tattoo art. Since then, Shawn’s dedication and enthusiasm for the art form has opened doors for him, allowing him to learn the craft himself from some of the greatest tattoo artists in the world. Today, Shawn’s life is consumed with tattooing, the art of tattoo and documentation of tattooing through painting. The show opens on Saturday, August 15th and runs until Tuesday, September 8th, 2009.

Shawn Barber will be exhibiting work in The Detournements of Wynn Miller at Exhibit Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Shepard Fairey, Mark Gonazales, Chloe Trujilllo and Axis are also participating in the show, among others. Opening night will feature a live ‘detournement’ painting of a 2009 Scion XD van by artist, Mario Luevanos, and sets by guest dj’s, Shepard Fairey and Keith Morris of Black Flag and The Circle Jerks. As as added bonus, limited edition Obey Giant prints signed by Shepard Fairey, Wynn Miller and Tony Alva will be available. The show runs from Saturday, June 13th to Saturday, July 11th, 2009.

Shawn Barber will be exhibiting work in the group show, Draw, at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco, CA. The show, which was curated by Curse Mackey and Erik Foss, features graphite drawings from over 300 artists from around the world. Draw debuted in October 2006 at New York City’s Fuse Gallery, and has since traveled to Austin’s SXSW and London’s Stolen Space Gallery. Moby, Ron English, Neck Face, Camille Rose Garcia, Ed Templeton, Mark Gonzales, WK Interact, Barry McGee, Doze Green and Tara McPherson are among the participating artists.

Barber’s Reverie

Shawn Barber is participating in Reverie, an international art and design workshop presented by ConceptArt.org and Massive Black. This multi-day training event is designed by top professionals and educators in the fields of video games, toys, comic books, film, illustration, and fine art with the purpose of improving skills and sharing ideas. The workshop opens with a party on Saturday, March 28th and runs until Tuesday, March 31st, 2009.
