Barber Appears on TLC series Miami Ink

Friday, April 20th, 2007

We always knew Shawn was a star but now it’s official. This Tuesday night, April 24th, Shawn Barber will appear on the hit TLC series Miami Ink.

Among other topics the episode features a segment on Shawn’s staggeringly beautiful portrait of prominent tattoo artist, celebrity and series regular Kat von D (who purchased the portrait for her private collection). While we have not seen an edit of the episode, we understand that they are focusing on the process involved in making the piece as well as its exhibition in the Art Basel Miami Beach 2006 show We’ll Make A Lover Of You curated by Francesco LoCastro and Juxtapoz.

Tune in this coming Tuesday night to see for yourself. TLC runs two one-hour episodes back to back and we don’t know which Shawn will appear in so you’d better watch both!

Barber’s Branding for TBWA Toronto

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Eight large scale paintings assigned to Shawn Barber by prominent Toronto ad agency TBWA Toronto now represent the agency as corporate branding imagery. The paintings of traditional native animals reminiscent of vintage Canadiana art from the sixties and seventies are getting a lot of local attention featured in larger than life window displays at the downtown Toronto headquarters.

The work also appears on the agency home page and in an article (in French and English) about the window displays themselves.

Shawn Barber in Art Basel Miami Beach

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Shawn Barber’s work will be exhibited alongside a number of other names you’ll recognize in the We’ll Make A Lover Of You Exhibition curated by Francesco LoCastro and presented at Art Basel Miami Beach 2006. The exhibition explores the avant-garde urban contemporary and pop surrealism characteristic of the Lowbrow movement. Forty internationally renowned artists will show their paintings, installations and sculptures at the ACSF Gallery from November 25, 2006 to January 21, 2007.

R. Grimes and Francesco LoCastro are collaborating to create a large-scale mural as the backdrop for the show. A deviation from the white walls traditionally seen in galleries, this colored canvas will connect the hanging pieces, the installations and the physical space. ArtCenter Gallery will be transformed into a venue to be admired as a whole in addition to the individual works within.

  • Exhibiting artists include Van Arno, Anthony Ausgang, Gary Baseman, Shawn Barber, Tim Biskup, Andrew Brandou, Ray Caesar, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Richard Coleman, Dave Cooper, Curve, Dalek, Mike Davis, Cardiac Design, Ron English, Shepard Fairey, Doze Green, R. “Lowbrow is beginning to enter the realm of the highbrow art world and is quickly becoming the voice of our society – a unique phenomenon which has not been documented within the constructs of past movements” says LoCastro, We’ll Make A Lover Of You curator and artist. “The goal of this show is to add a new facet to Art Basel and to introduce South Florida, as well as the international art community, to a fresh era in art.”

Opening Reception: Friday, December 8, 2006 7 pm to 11 pm.
