Magnet Artists Win at Society of Illustrators 51

Gordon Wiebe, Graham Roumieu, Nate Williams, Emiliano Ponzi and Red Nose Studio all had work chosen to appear in the Society of Illustrators’ 51st book and exhibition with a combined total of 11 awards. Emiliano Ponzi received a SILVER medal in the Editorial category for an illustration that appeared in The New York Times’ Book Review section for a review of Jose Saramago’s Death With Interruptions. The winning pieces will be published in the illustration annual and exhibited at the Society from January through March of 2009. Congratulations go out to everyone!

Sauvage for Sky Doll Spaceship

Marguerite Sauvage contributed an illustration to Sky Doll Lacrima Christi Collection: Volume 2, a collection of artwork inspired by and paying tribute to Sky Doll, a French comic book series created by Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa. The 64-page book is published by Soleil Productions and is currently only available in Europe.

Roumieu for Sears’ No Peeking Event

Graham Roumieu illustrated for Sears’ No Peeking Event in downtown Toronto. The event features a gigantic 2200 square foot maze, an electric train, free gift wrapping, ice sculptures and tons of free giveaways. It’s being held at Dundas Square and it opened this past Sunday and will run until Wednesday, November 26th. Remember to keep an eye out for Graham’s work which was animated and projected on a giant screen overlooking the maze.

Barber for Edward Albee’s The Goat

Shawn Barber illustrated for the Pittsburgh Playhouse’s production of Edward Albee’s black comedy The Goat or Who Is Sylvia? The play opens on Friday, November 21st and runs until Saturday, December 14th, 2008.

Red Nose Studio Wins at PEARL Awards

Red Nose Studio’s illustration for USPS’s Deliver magazine won a Silver award in the Best Use of Illustration category at the 5th Annual PEARL Awards. The illustration was done for issue 18 of Deliver and was art directed by Grayson Cardinell at Campbell-Ewald. Thanks and congratulations go out to Grayson and everyone else at Campell-Ewald / Deliver!

The PEARL Awards was started in 2004 by The Custom Publishing Council and is the continent’s first award program devoted exclusively to custom publishing. It is open to custom publishers small and large, B2B or B2C, who represent clients from a wide range of industries and produce magazines, newsletters, and/or web publications.

Roumieu Wins Applied Arts Award

Graham Roumieu’s collaboration with Soapbox Design won an award from Applied Arts in the Design category. The entry, Some Thoughts on Ideas: NuARs Call for Entry 2008, plays with the idea of ideas, both good and bad. Congratulations go out to Graham and everyone at Soapbox Design!

Hoo’s Toting Around the Sweetest Little Bag?

Catalina Estrada has designed another bag for Blue Q, the designers and manufacturers of decorative objects, eclectic bath products, miniature books and other artful curiosities.

The “Owl Tote” is made of 100% recycled woven polypropylene and joins Catalina’s “Cat Shoulder Bag.” Both are available on the Blue Q website and at various boutiques internationally.

Roumieu + Shannon Win At the ADCC Awards

Congratulations to Graham Roumieu and Ben Shannon who were recognized at this year’s Advertising + Design Club of Canada Awards. Graham Roumieu won a Silver medal for illustration in the Editorial category for his work with The Walrus, as well as a merit award in the Miscellaneous Graphic Design category for his work with Soapbox Design on NUAR’s Call for Entries. Ben Shannon’s work for the Axe Skin Contact Wrestling campaign with Dashboard also received a merit award in the Miscellaneous Interactive Design category. Thanks and congratulations go out to everyone at The Walrus, Soapbox Design and Dashboard!

Barber at Canvas Los Angeles

Shawn Barber will be exhibiting work in Canvas Los Angeles’ second annual Visionaries show. The show marks the gallery’s first anniversary and will showcase the best and brightest from the global tattoo community. Other artists in the show include Guy Aitchison, Matthew Bone, Alex Garcia, Nikko Hurtado and L.A. Ink’s Kim Saigh, among others. The show opens on Saturday, November 15th and runs until Sunday, January 4th, 2009.

Estrada for Microsoft’s Zune

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Catalina Estrada was invited by Microsoft to illustrate a new line of zodiac-themed Zune devices. The series is a follow-up to Catalina’s work last year for the Zune Originals line and includes a unique illustration for each sign of the zodiac. Users can have the artwork engraved on their Zune device (including a personal inscription!) for an additional $10 and should order by December 19th to ensure delivery in time for the holidays.
